We call this the Beer Hike because we hike at a part of the Wissahickon close to Earth, Bread, and Brewery. The beer hikes are special for several reasons. One, we only hike in this area on these beer hikes. Two, the trails are far off the beaten path. Three, we head to Earth after the hike for pizza and beer, maybe the best around in both categories.
We start this 2.5-3 hour walk near Thomas Mansion. Parts of this will be steep and hilly. Park on the street, not in the mansion parking lot. We'll then walk down to Rittenhousetown estate which once included a paper mill dating back to 1700. The house still remains. We'll cross Lincoln Drive and then hike the far side of Wissahickon. We may venture though Penn Charter and Philadelphia University campuses which are nearby. We will definitely pass under the Henry Ave Bridge, a wonder of the world, and may visit Hermits Cave on the loop.
Earth Bread & Brewery (7136 Germantown, 19119) is a special place. http://local.google.c... It's not a sports bar for drinkers. No TV's. All food and beer are natural. They brew 3-4 different brews that change each month or so. Best beer I've ever had bar none- real easy to say. The brick oven pizza is great. Salads are great. Not much else on the menu.
Use this Google Map link to the starting point at Thomas Mansion. http://local.google.c... We'll meet next to the driveway to the mansion on Wissahickon Ave.
To carpool from Hill House (201 W Evergreen, 19118) meet at 145pm. Each carpooler chips in $1 at the start . Make sure to email me if you want to carpool. Here's a Google Map link to Hill House.

Warm weather hike info:
-- Put on sun bloc before leaving home.
-- For hikes in a park it's best to wear long sleeve shirts and long pants for protection against bugs, thorn bushes, poison ivy, etc. I'm often regretful when I don't take my own advice.
-- Bring lots of water. Best to get a 3 liter hydration pack or reservoir. More about water: http://www.hikingarou...
-- Only a forecast of thunderstorms and torrential rains will cancel a hike. A normal rain is no problem in warm weather.
If the weather is iffy I'll email a weather report a few days before the hike.. To see more about the weather visit: http://www.hikingarou...
Have your event fee ready in dollar bills so we can get going right away. No coins, dubloons, or 5's or 10"s. Thank you.
Please be aware of our group rating system. We need a 5 star rating or no rating. Read more about this at: http://www.hikingarou...
If you change your mind please change your RSVP. No-shows may be barred from events. Email or call if you have a problem.
Okay to bring fido. Please read the Doggy Page first: http://www.hikingarou...
