Tinicum Wildlife Refuge & Brunch

The early bird gets the worm at the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum. So, if you want to see birds eating worms we got to get there early. What we can see during this 7.5 mile loop walk is outstanding. Blue herons, eagles (we are near the football stadium), owls, cormorants, turtles, water moccasins (I thought I lost my shoe), are just some of the great sights.
Afterwards we will go for brunch at Sabrinas or Tony Lucs. Both are outstanding and you can expect a line of 50 people. Yes, we can get on a waiting list one hour ahead of time at Sabrinas.

We will walk the 7.5 mile loop in 2.5-3 hours. Tinicum is flat.

Meet in the parking lot, there are 2, next to the nature center building. Wait at the small path going to the nature center. Here's a Google Map link: http://maps.google.co...
To carpool from Hill House (201 W Evergreen, 19118) meet at 735am.

Both the R7 and R8 trains, end of line, go within blocks of Hill House. There is also a bus on Germantown Ave.

Two days before event I usually email a weather report.

Some general rules and responsibilities for all hikes:
1- Stay with the group. If you intend to leave let the leader know.
2- Listen to instructions, especially for safety precautions.
3- If you have a problem tell the leader.
4- Do not loose contact with the group.

If you change your mind please change your RSVP. No-shows may be barred from my events. Email or call if you have a problem.
If the hike is full at the moment, then just check back a day or two before the hike. People always change plans.

Great to bring Fido.

We only hiked for about 2 hours at Tinicum because of the cold, then ate for about 1.5 hours at Sabrina's. After lunch we walked a few more miles around the Italian Market. We stopped at 3 S Philly bakeries including my favorite, Varallo. The lakes at Tinicum were partially frozen with turquoise water flowing between ice packs. In some areas it even looked like the waves or ripples were frozen. This hike was different because we bushwhacked around an area that is probably not accessible in warmer months. If Debra can upload her photos you will see how great it was. Really worthwhile. Would do it again, for 2 hours only in this cold weather.

I had never been here before. The cold stillness of a freezing winter day was unique and peaceful. It was early and the temperatures were in the teens, but it was worth it. We were surrounded by beauty and it was fun to capture some of it on my camera. I'm looking forward to seeing this place in another season. Today, going out of my comfort zone (temperature-wise) and having a wonderful experience will be a good memory to look back on.
