Finally what you have all been waiting for: a beer hike. We start near Thomas Mansion in front of a historic house right on Wissahickon Ave. Don't go into Thomas Mansion. Their is plenty of street parking in the area. Use this link. http://local.google.c...
We then briefly hike on a trail on the other side of Lincoln Drive towards the Schuylkill. Instead of continuing on this trail like we did last time, we detour through Philadelphia University and Penn Charter campuses and explore these areas before making a loop back to the Wissahickon. The nicest part of the PU campus is hidden away, about one block from the main campus.
If we have time and conditions permit we will visit Hermits Cave, the Henry Ave bridge (a wonder of the world) , and RittenhouseTown (17th century). Parts of this walk may be hilly. Several trails will be steep up and down. Hike time is 2-3 hours.
Now to the important information. After the 2.5 hour hike we head to the best microbrewery in the city: Earth, Bread, and Brewery in Mt Airy. It's only 5-10 minutes away. Here's a link: http://local.google.c....
They brew 3 types of beer on a rotating basis, never to brew the same beer again. They will let you taste each beer for free, so you can order what you like. 13oz costs $4, 20oz costs $5.50. They also have a superb selection of guest beers (not found elsewhere) and wines. Food is great, but selection is slim. Pizza (brick oven) and salads are pretty much it. Atmosphere is real nice. We will go to the upstairs bar area.
Last time I was there they did not start serving food till 5pm. Last week that had a near black looking beer, 7% alcohol, called appropriately FreeTheHiker, that is fantastic. I plan to have 1 or 2 beers.
To carpool from Hill House (201 W Evergreen, 19118) meet at 140pm. Meeting point only 3 miles away.
