Bridlewild HIke & Dinner

There are very few areas besides the Wissahickon where I'm happy to hike on a regular basis. Bridlewild is one because of the varied and beautiful terrain. Plan for a 2.5-3 hour hilly hike. Sunset is around 540pm. Conditions will dictate the length of the hike. Only starting later because I'm busy earlier in the day.

The Bridlewild trail system in Lower Merion has at least 70 miles of trails with only about 35 miles officially marked. The trails go through parks, down small streets, past mansions and fields. Often you think you are hiking on a beautiful mountain trail; other times you are walking down a small street past luxorious mansions. Only Bridlewild Trail Association members (and guests) are allowed on these trails because of the many easements granted.

The plan for this hike is to start at Rolling HIll Park, then head south towards Mill Creek Rd. After crossing the road and creek we plan to follow the path to the historic road heading east. We will then head up Mill Creek Rd and Rose Glen Rd to find the loop trail on that parallels Soapstone Rd. If we have time we will take a loop around Waverly Heights before heading back. Staying on route even with a map and the group brain power will be no easy problem.

This area could be great in the snow. You may want to bring something like a plastic trash can top, or plastic trash bag, that can be used to slide down steeper trails.

If you want to carpool from Hill House in Chestnut Hill, I'm leaving at 230pm. Link to Hill House. http://local.google.c....

Afterwards we will head for The Great American Pub in nearby Narberth. Here's a link with directions from Rolling Hill Park.

We need an ERP!

Two days before the event I will email a weather update. Because this area is quite hilly, not sure if it's good in deep snow.

Have your event fee ready in dollar bills. No dubloons or 5's or 10"s.

If you change your mind please change your RSVP. No-shows may be barred from my events. Email or call if you have a problem.

Great to bring fido.

We hiked in 1-2 feet of snow that was only slightly wetter than normal. On the steep ups and downs the great amount of snow actually made hiking easier because the deepness prevented slipping. Encountered very few slippery areas. Ended right after sunset. Bridlewild is really beautiful. Only walked into one person's backyard. Got the driveway of this incredible mansion mixed up with the path. The owner bopped by with her daughters, her ladiness, and invited us in for tea and cookies. We declined because her neighbors had just had us over.

Good hike! Everyone was very friendly. The sun was out too. Woohoo!

The initial part was a little slippery because the snow was packed down by other hikers. Before long, we were in areas where hardly any footprints could be found, and the snow was really nice to hike in. We had nice views of the stream, historical ruins, a few deer, and impressive mansions. Total distance was 5.8 miles.
