New York: Uptown and The Downtown High Line

Hill House (map)

Selected By: Sidney G

Yahoo, we're heading back to the Big Apple for a 7-10 mile walk down Broadway, though Central Park, ending at St John's The Divine at Morningside Park at 112 St for a short visit. This cathedral is spectacular.

Then we will take the subway all the way downtown to near Battery Park and walk through the financial district and then do something very special: walk the Highline. What's the High Llne? Well, don't have time to give a good explanation at the moment. It's a 2 story high walkway that goes for a mile or two.

From the High Line Site: http://www.thehighlin...
What is the High Line?
The High Line is a public park built on a 1.45-mile-long elevated rail structure running from Gansevoort Street to 34th Street on Manhattan's West Side.

What was it used for?
The High Line was a freight rail line, in operation from 1934 to 1980. It carried meat to the meatpacking district, agricultural goods to the factories and warehouses of the industrial West Side, and mail to the Post Office.

We start by carpooling from Hill House at 745am. Or you can meet us at 9am at the New Jersey Transit- Hamilton Station next to ticket counter. Round trip ticket used to be around $23. We take the 907am train to Penn Station New York arriving 10:37am. We will stop for lunch at Whole Foods near Central Park around noon. This place is incredible. We plan to leave NYC 4-5pm being back in Philly around 7pm.

We are hiking in NYC, this is not a shopping trip.

This is a great NYC interactive map. I used it to help plan the NYC part of the trip.

Super duper! Broadway, Central Park, St John's the Divine, Greenwich Village were greaaaat. High Line and the car stacking garages nearby were pretty neat too. Good company and great weather made the trip real enjoyable.
