It's Mothers Day and time for the South Philly Bakery Hike. We'll hike by (and into) at least a dozen bakeries in the area. Some will be only bread, some pastries, some both. Figure about 2.5-3 hours and about 4-5 miles of flat walking. Add breakfast before and Tony Luc's after to make this day a real treat. Let me know in the comment area if you are interested in breakfast and/or Tony Lucs.

We meet about a half mile from the Italian Market inside or outside at Black & Brew, 1523 E Passayunk Ave, 19148. They are rated 5 star for cheap breakfasts, so I'm getting there about 9am. http://local.google.c...
Plan to drive around for 10 minutes to find an all day parking spot. Add a few more miles to the hike if you want to head to Tony Lucs, the best non-tourist cheesesteak place in Philly.

To carpool from Hill House (201 W Evergreen, 19118) meet at 815am. Each carpooler chips in $3 at the start. Make sure to email me if you want to carpool. Here's a Google Map link to Hill House.

Make sure to bring a shopping bag. I usually buy a few loaves of bread and one pastry. Usually taste lots of samples and I'm calling "honks" ahead of time in case you buy anything I like. (I'll explain the honks 'call' on the hike.)

Two days before the event I usually email a weather update.

Have your event fee ready in dollar bills so we can get going right away. No coins, dubloons, or 5's or 10"s. Thank you.

Hiking Around Philly is different from most hiking groups because we hike (and sometimes bicycle) off the beaten path. We hike in the woods and the city. We go places that won't be found on any hiker's map. The events are usually within a 1.5 hour drive from Philly, though we sometimes visit NYC or the Jersey shore. Once each year we go to Acadia National Park in Maine, one of the best places in the world to hike. We sometimes participate in a conservation work party in a area we hike.

And, we do a lot more than hike; we explore. Whether it be a trail in a park or a back alley in the city, we always look for neat things, and we find them. Did you notice the 25 foot dinosaur made from pink suntan lotion bottles? We take time to appreciate a beautiful tree, a low flying eagle, or a hickory horned devil (look it up). We visit museums, historic houses, bakeries, battleships, and other neat places. We appreciate architecture, sculptures (Philly has more than any other US city, yea!), or whatever we find near our path. After a hike we often eat at a special place. And, we rarely repeat ourselves.

Fearless lost explorers and sidney (fleas) are curious. This group is not for people content to only go down one trail and up another, nor for people happy to take the same or beaten path. This group may also be different because only one person leads hikes, gets folks lost, and does the bulk of administrative work. So, please read on to make sure you want to be a proud flea.
