Join me to explore trails less traveled in the wild (I saw a ferocious chipmunk the other day) Wissahickon Creek part of Fairmount Park.
We hike at a moderate pace for about 2.5 to 3 hours. The terrain is hilly with lots of ups and downs. Each month I forge a different route or get lost in another area depending on your point of view. This is not a hike for those who want to go straight down one trail. We go up, down, around, back, hit dead ends, reverse course, and so on.

Afterwards we'll head out to either Whole Foods Plymouth Meeting or Top of the Hill for lunch. Both places are great and inexpensive. Whole foods has more room. Top of the Hill is best for small groups or when the garden area is open.

Only hard rain, 100% chance of thunderstorms, or pestilence stops us from hiking. Two days before the event I'll email a weather forecast.

A nice hike with excellent weather. Total distance: 6.5 miles.

Nice hike in an area I had not explored on foot. Mostly shaded with a mixture of smooth and rocky trails. Nice group of friendly people that spread out so it wasn't crowded.

The trails were interesting/scenic and the pace was challenging enough with plenty of breaks inbetween. The organizer Sidney was very knowledgable and fun host. I would highly recommend future events.

Hiking Around Philly is different from most hiking groups because we hike (and sometimes bicycle) off the beaten path. We hike in the woods and the city. We go places that won't be found on any hiker's map. The events are usually within a 1.5 hour drive from Philly, though we sometimes visit NYC or the Jersey shore. Once each year we go to Acadia National Park in Maine, one of the best places in the world to hike. We sometimes participate in a conservation work party in a area we hike.

And, we do a lot more than hike; we explore. Whether it be a trail in a park or a back alley in the city, we always look for neat things, and we find them. Did you notice the 25 foot dinosaur made from pink suntan lotion bottles? We take time to appreciate a beautiful tree, a low flying eagle, or a hickory horned devil (look it up). We visit museums, historic houses, bakeries, battleships, and other neat places. We appreciate architecture, sculptures (Philly has more than any other US city, yea!), or whatever we find near our path. After a hike we often eat at a special place. And, we rarely repeat ourselves.

Fearless lost explorers and sidney (fleas) are curious. This group is not for people content to only go down one trail and up another, nor for people happy to take the same or beaten path. This group may also be different because only one person leads hikes, gets folks lost, and does the bulk of administrative work. So, please read on to make sure you want to be a proud flea.
