Ben Franklin Bridge, Olde City, Ferry, & Tacconelli's

Standard Tap (map)

Selected By: Sidney G

The view from the Ben Franklin Bridge is unique. You can see up and down the Delaware and the cities of Philadelphia and Camden from high up. Besides hiking the bridge, we're taking the ferry from Philly to Camden, exploring olde city and Penn's Landing, then topping things off with pizza at Tacconelli's.

Starting at the Standard Tap (see link below) where parking for the day is usually no problem, we head through old city to Penn's Landing and the ferry to Camden. We'll take the 1pm ferry, cost $7 (one way or round trip) to Camden. In Camden waterfront we'll get a close look at the Battleship New Jersey, walk through an historic area of Camden, the beautiful Johnson Library, and Rutgers Camden, before heading back via the Ben Franklin Bridge. (it's possible to take the ferry back to Philly without additional cost, but you will miss a really nice bridge walk.) We'll find the log cabin and large piazza in Northern Liberties before driving to nearby Tacconelli's at 330pm. Tacconelli's opens at 4pm.

Tacconelli's, in most pizza aficionados opinion, has the best pizza in the area. Pizza's must be ordered ahead of time (you just can't walk in and expect to get served). So, you need to tell me by July 8, Thursday, 9am, in the COMMENT area when you RSVP if you plan to join us at Tacconelli's. I'll order half a pizza per person unless you want more. Big eaters can handle 6 pieces because the crust is thin. It's a byob, so you need to bring your own wine or beer.

Those who decide to join us at Tacconelli's after I place an order must call Tacconelli's to reserve a pizza under your own name for 4pm on Sunday. You never know, something might be available at 4pm.

The best pizza's are the white pizza's with tomatoes. Tastes like pizza with wonderful sauce and GARLIC - I can smell the garlic now! Then add one more topping. Toppings are great. Cost for pizza is $12 + $3 per topping. White pizza with tomatoes cost $15. With another tipping $18.

Remember, I'm must order the dough for pizza ahead of time. We can decide on specific toppings at the restaurant. I will order pizza for those who COMMENT is the RSVP area by 9am, Thursday. Tacconelli's only serves pizza; nothing else on the menu. If you want to drink, bring wine or beer. There's also a beer store across the street from The Standard Tap.

I was really looking forward to this hike; sorry I had to miss it. Hope there's another bridge crossing in the future!

Lots of fun and a great challenge. I've lived in Philly for 40+ years, but it was a day of firsts for me: first time walking across the BF Bridge, and first meal at Tacconelli's. Thanks for a great hike and lots of interesting info, Sydney!

This was my first time with the group. Sidney was well organized and knew a lot about the different areas of Philly and Camden and pointed out interesting facts during the hike. I really enjoied the hike and meeting everyone.

I missed out on the hike due to traffic on the Schuykill, but went exploring on my own once there. With Sidney not having a cell phone, I had no way of connecting with the group (There had been no cell number provided). Nonetheless, I had a great afternoon and was later able to meet with the group at the restaurant after 4pm.
