Acadia National Park in Maine in the month of September is not just beautiful, it's simply the best place I've ever hiked. There are 200+ miles of trails including 60 miles of carriage paths that go up and down and around 20+ small mountains. The background photo gives you some idea of the place. The nicest part is that it's right by the ocean. In September the smart people visit because there are no bugs, and the temperature is perfect for outdoor activities.
Besides hiking, you can bike the carriage trials, participate in ranger nature programs, take boat trips to nearby islands, kayak in the area, etc. To see some of my 2009 Acadia trip photos, find the Acadia 2009 photo album.
Meeting Up & Duration
We meet at the Seawall Campground office on Sunday, Sept 19 at 5pm. It's a 10 hour drive from Philly, 12 hour with stops. We head back the next Sunday, Sept 26. To drive in one day, I start at 6am. Arrive 6pm.
Where To Stay
I'm camping at Seawall National Campground, however, there are many hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, etc in the area. If you stay elsewhere, we will meetup for the hikes which usually start in Bar Harbor.
Last year the cost for a Seawall walk-in campsite was around $14 per night. Two tents are allowed on each site, so $7, if you share. No need to make a site reservation this time of year.
Costs
If you camp, the cost is very little.
• Transportation. The main cost is transportation to get up there. It's about a ? mile round trip with at least $50 in tolls. I'll soon post approximate car costs for the week. It's difficult to get to Acadia by any other form of transportation. (50-100 years ago, there was a railroad.)
• Food costs. I usually breakfast out. I bring something to nosh for the hikes, then usually buy prepared food at a Supermarket for dinner. I eat dinner at a spot with a spectacular view at Seawall. Note that seagulls in the area, will quickly grab an unattended dinner.
• Campsite cost given above or other lodging of your choice.
• The shower next to the campground costs about $2. Bathrooms at the campground are nice, but no showers.
• Only folks who have paid the Optional Yearly Event Fee can RSVP and there is also a special event fee of $20, due Sept 1, which is non-refundable. All folks not paid by that date will be removed from RSVP list.
• Park Car Fee- The park charges $20 per week per car unless you have a National Park membership.
Carpooling
Because I sometimes stop off at relatives and friends in the area, it's difficult for me to carpool. I also often stay in Maine for 2 weeks. Will let you know closer to event time if I'm available for carpooling.
When you RSVP, indicate if you are willing to drive and carpool. Because camping equipment takes up a lot of space, you may not be able to fill the car with people. I might take my bike, but do not have room for another one.
Route
Here's a link to a Google Map giving the way I go. I think it is the fastest way.
