Bartram's Gardens, Penn Anthropology Museum + Dock St Brew

Bartram's Gardens (map)

Selected By: Sidney G

Bartram's Gardens is a little piece of history along the Schuylkill surrounded by a ghetto. We visited this winter. Now we're returning for a house and garden tour. Afterwards we head by car to nearby (1 mile) Penn campus and the Anthropology Museum which can only be compared to The British Museum in London. It's a treasure of Philly and one of the must see museums right after, or even before the Art Museum. Afterwards those interested can head to the super Dock Street Brewing Co for great food - pizza, salads, calamari, etc-- and beer.

We meet at 1100am at Bartram's Gardens, http://www.bartramsga..., in order to take the 1130 House + Heritage Tour. Cost for admission $10. Those interested can arrive early to take the special 1030am Native Medicinal Plants of the Northeast tour. Here's a Google Map link to the parking lot where we will meet: http://maps.google.co...

After the tour and an exploration of the area we will drive about 1 mile to 45th & Kingsessing, next to Clarke Park. We meet where Kingsessing St runs into the park. Here's a link. http://maps.google.co...
Park anywhere on the street.

From here we walk towards Penn and the Anthropology Museum. http://www.penn.museu... It's about a one mile walk. We will spend about an hour in the museum, Admission around $7, before heading out to either historic Woodlawn Cemetary or back to our cars via the Penn campus . At around 330pm we head to the Dock Street Brewing Co at 701 S 50th St, 19143 just in time for the 4pm Happy Hour. It's a 1-2 mile drive straight down Baltimore Ave.

Dock Street is a brew pub is located in an old fire station just off Baltimore Ave. Neighborhood is so-so. You need to be careful anywhere around Penn. http://www.dockstreet...

To carpool from Hill House (201 W Evergreen, 19118) meet at 1015am. Each carpooler chips in $4 at the start. Here's a google map link to Hill House.

It was very good, but very hot. We explored the museum at Bartram's with a guide and the gardens on our own. Then we drove to Clark Park where we enjoyed the outdoor market . After that, we walked to the University of Pennsylvania Museum which is awesome. About an hour later we walked back to our cars and drove to Dock St Brew where we had beer and great pizza. Did I mention that it was very hot?
