The smell of pastrami & barrel pickles overwhelmed my caution when I planned this NYC trip in August. We are going to head to the Lower East Side from Penn Station towards the famous Katz's Deli and Essex Pickles. Depending on the heat we will walk between 5-9 miles.
Starting from Penn Station in NYC we will walk down Broadway and the Bowery past the Empire State Building, the Museum of Sex, Greenwich Village, etc. towards the Lower East Side where we will find Katz's Deli and Essex Pickles. Of course, we will stop in any place that seems interesting (( museum of sex sounds interesting )). We will have lunch at Katz's if it's not too busy. If the weather cooperates we will head east towards East River Park or bop around Chinatown and the Village.

We meet at Hill House at 745am to carpool or at Hamilton train station at 9am to catch the 906am NJ Transit train to Penn Station NYC, arriving 1036am. (Cost as of 7/26/10 around $30 round trip. Half price for folks 62 or older.) Center City people have also met us on the train getting on at Trenton. People have even met us at the main separate NJ Transit area at Penn Station. Warm weather hike info:
1- Put on sunscreen before leaving home.
2- Bring lots of water. Best to get a 3 liter hydration pack or reservoir.
3- Only a forecast of thunderstorms and torrential rains will cancel a hike. A normal rain is no problem in warm weather.
4- You might want to bring an umbrella for the sun.
