Bicycling on a hot day is a lot easier than walking because you make your own breeze. This week we're bicycling for 2-3 hours though the heart of Fairmount Park at an easy pace starting from Chamonioux Mansion. We've hiked in this area before, but biking allows us to explore more.
From Chamoniux Mansion we bike to the Strawberry Mansion Bridge, cross over and take the Boxer Trail pass 7 historic houses to the Girard Ave Bridge. We'll cross the Schuylkill via the Girard Ave Bridge, pass the Zoo, the PA Civil War Memorial, Memorial Hall, Horticultural Center, Japanese House, Mann Music Center etc etc etc. Eventually we will pass Belmont Pleateau and head back to the starting point. Of course, via bike we have a lot more flexibility and can see a lot more.
Even though I once owned three bikes and did all work myself, including building wheels, I haven't biked much in the last 5 years. Many times in the past I went bike camping, self contained, carrying all my own equipment, for months on end during the summer.
Make sure your bike is in working order with enough air in the tires. Tires should be kevlar belted. You need a hybrid or mountain type bike that can go on dirt or stone roads. These bike rides should be great fun.
We will meet at this parking area near Chamoniux Mansion:http://local.google.c...
We can't carpool from Hill House because I can't carry extra bikes. So, just meet us in the park near Chamoniux Mansion.
Always good idea to bring some food, your camera, and on hot days a dry shirt that you can change into.
Warm weather hike info:
• Apply sunscreen before leaving home. See more about sunscreens under Files.
• Bring lots of water. Best to get a 3 liter hydration pack or reservoir. More about water: http://www.hikingarou...
• Only a forecast of thunderstorms and torrential rains will cancel a hike. A normal rain is no problem in warm weather.
color=orangered]If the weather is iffy I'll email a weather report a few days before the hike.. To see more about the weather visit: http://www.hikingarou...
