We had to modify the schedule, for the better, because the Urban Outfitters cafeteria may be closed at noon. The cafeteria is tooo good to miss.
We visit the Navy Yard and Swedish Museum once a year on a Friday, because the Yard is not open on the weekend. This event is special for a host of reasons.
We start off this super day with breakfast or coffee at the Urban Outfitters (UO) cafeteria. This is the most fabulous funkiest art deco eclectic museum you have ever seen. The ceiling is 70 feet high. See the Meetup photo. The company's world headquarters is located here, so no expense was spared decorating the cafeteria in funky cool warehouse dry dock style. Seeing is believing. I'm not good enough with words to better describe it. Here's one cool thing: one set of navy yard railroad tracks were diverted to go right through the front doors of the cafeteria.
After exploring the cafeteria we will look at the other UO buildings from the turn of the 19th century. We will then bop around the Navy Yard to see the historic buildings, ships, some WWII vintage including an aircraft carrier, and whatever for about 2 hours. See the walking tour of the Navy Yard under MORE, then FILES.
The Navy yard has lots of other neat places including Tasty Baking, quarters where soldiers once housed, an airfield, and parks. I think 20th Century Fox and Paramount have studios here (They want to keep it quiet. Security people have told me that they regularly see stars pass through the gates.) It's right on the Delaware so we have nice views as we walk. We only have time to visit a small part of the Yard.
At around 130pm we will walk via FDR Park or drive to the Swedish Museum which is less than one mile away for a planned 2pm tour. The museum is beautiful and small displaying works of art, photos, crystal, maps, neat artifacts, special exhibits, etc, etc, etc. You definitely want to spend time in the large copper map room: all the walls are copper.
Note: the Swedish people may be the first Old World folks to settle in the Philadelphia area. Gloria del Rei, the Swedish Church in South Philly may be the oldest surviving building in Philly; completed around 1700.
For $50 total we can get a free guided tour, unlimited numbers. Doing the math, if 20 folks show up, admission will be $2.50. With less than 10 folks we can get the group rate of $5, no tour. The museum needs advance notice for the tour, so sign up asap.
At around 3pm we drive a few miles to a wonderful 5 star mexican restaurant in South Philly, El Jerocho, for late lunch or early dinner. Location: 13th and Ellsworth St. http://local.google.c...
It's a dumpy little place with great inexpensive food.
We will walk around 5-7 miles.
We meet at the UO cafeteria coffee shop. Park at UO cafeteria lot in the Navy Yard. When you go through security just ask for directions to the Urban Outfitters Cafeteria. Here's a Google Map link showing from top to bottom: Swedish Museum, Navy Yard entrance, UO Cafeteria. http://local.google.c...
To carpool from Hill House (201 W Evergreen, 19118) meet at 9 am. Each carpooler chips in $4 at the start. Make sure to email me if you want to carpool. Here's a Google Map link to Hill House.

Always good idea to bring some food, your camera, and on hot days a dry shirt that you can change into.
Warm weather hike info:
• Apply sunscreen before leaving home. See more about sunscreens under Files.
• On real hot days, bring an umbrella for the sun. Highly recommend: http://www.campmor.co...
• Bring lots of water. Best to get a 3 liter hydration pack or reservoir. More about water: http://www.hikingarou...
• Only a forecast of thunderstorms and torrential rains will cancel a hike. A normal rain is no problem in warm weather.
color=orangered]If the weather is iffy I'll email a weather report a few days before the hike.. To see more about the weather visit: http://www.hikingarou...
Have your event fee ready in dollar bills so we can get going right away. No coins, dubloons, or 5's or 10"s. Thank you.
Please be aware of our group rating system. We need a 5 star rating or no rating. Read more about this at: http://www.hikingarou...
If you change your mind please change your RSVP. No-shows may be barred from events. Email or call if you have a problem.
