The John Heinz Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum is a great place to hike year-round. Hard to believe it's in Philadelphia next to the airport. When you enter the refuge from a philly neighborhood, you pass through a time and place portal.
Within the last year they revamped most of the trails, so you can view wildlife in the lakes during most of the walk. Winter hikes are especially nice when the lakes freeze over and you can see footprints of critters. And, believe it or not, the refuge is buzzing with activity in the winter. nd 5 miles of paved trails. Most of the park is gentle rolling hills, though I've been told there are some steep areas.
We'll hike the 7.5 mile loop depending on the footing. Warm weather and good footing we may do the 8.5 mile loop. We hike at a good pace, though we stop to view wildlife. Bring your camera. Maybe you can catch an eagle or owl!
Afterwards we'll head to the Dock Street Brewing Co at 50th & Baltimore for great food - pizza, calamari, fries, etc - and beer.
Caution: You should be able to walk 3-4 hours without much of a break. You should have recently hiked 8 miles in conditions detailed above. No hills; all flat.
To carpool from Hill House meet at 1030 am. Each carpooler chips in $4 at the start. Email me 3-4 days in advance and receive a reply.
Roads are great....though I've changed to a no.....don't feel like getting wet. If it does stop by 11:30 I might just go without changing my RSVP again.
Refunds are not offered for this Meetup.
Tinicum is great in the snow. Plan 15-30 minutes of extra travel time. If you are early, explore the nature center building.
