Carpooling Cost
Folks who carpool share costs and help the driver to pay some expenses, not all. With gas around $3/gal the government allows $.55 per mile deduction for business car expenses. I'm told this is not a generous deduction. However, I'm not interested in collecting fees to cover the real cost to run the car, just a fair amount.
If I'm doing all the driving like a chauffeur, 10 cents a mile per person is appropriate. And this can include considerable tolls like a $4-5 change to take the bridge to Jersey. This should be paid up front, not afterwards, by passengers. Parking will be split equally.
If the driving is shared, then regular drivers should pay less, maybe half this amount.
Examples:
To carpool to the Jersey shore the mileage is about 180 round trip. Each carpooler would chip in $18 plus a few dollars for tolls. $20-25.
To carpool 10 miles round trip to Ft Washington St Park, each carpooler would chip in $1.
Of course, you can use any scheme you want, but this is what I expect.
I will include the trip distance in the write-ups. Since there are many ways to figure carpooling expenses, feedback via email is appreciated.
Any carpool driver should have a car that is clean, roomy, 4 doors, in good condition, safe and the driver should be a safe considerate driver.
