I don't have a cell phone. And if you get lost on the way to a meetup, there is not much anyone can do for you. And if you are 5 minutes late, people who arrive early may have been waiting 15 minutes for you, not 5 minutes.
Here's what I do to prevent getting lost and make sure I arrive on time:
1- Plan to be at the event 15 minutes early. Note the time and place or the event. Plan for appropriate traffic, not a speedy run on open roads.
2- Look at the Google Satellite Map of the starting point. You can often see the exact meeting point at street level, even if the location is in Rome.
3- Write down the exact address and/or GPS coordinates of the starting point. Information in write up.
4-Print out several Google Maps: a) zoomed in on the area around the meeting spot. If you are close you will know. b) map showing route from your home. c) print directions from your home.
When I take these precautions I rarely get lost and if lost, I quickly find my way. Most importantly I arrive at the event on time.
Hope this is helpful.
